The Rio Olympics torch will be lit at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro in fewer than 100 days.
Security for big sports events has always been a public concern. “Safety is the first issue that needs to be considered in organizing the biggest match on earth,” the International Olympic Committee said. Chinese enterprises Nuctech and Zhejiang Dahua Technology were chosen to ensure the safety of the Rio Olympics by offering X-ray inspection and video surveillance equipment. They were selected thanks to their active local presence, excellent product quality and strong execution, which have been well recognized by foreign markets.
Nuctech signed a contract with Brazil’s legal department in mid April and became a main supplier of X-ray inspection equipment for the Olympic event. Zhejiang Dahua will offer video surveillance products. The company’s cutting-edge facial recognition software will give information support for security work.
Nuctech won three bids out of four for the Olympics’ security equipment and will offer more than 200 X-ray scanning devices for suitcases and large containers. The company now claims the biggest global security equipment market share and has a great deal of experience with big events, including the Summit of the Americas in Panama. However, the Rio Olympics is even more demanding.
This is the second time that Nuctech has offered security equipment for big events in Brazil. The first time was for the 2014 World Cup where the company provided nearly 600 items. Chen said that it was only two months away from the World Cup when the contract was signed, and they needed to transport the equipment to Brazil, install them and finish personnel training in that amount of time.
“Because of customs clearance, the equipment for Brasilia stadium hadn’t been put in place only three days before the event kicked off,” Chen recalled.
“Normally, we need two weeks to install 40 sets of equipment, but we eventually installed 80 sets in one day”.
Brazil's presidential palace called after the event and asked for the company’s security equipment because it saw the strength of the products.
With increasing market recognition, Nuctech managed to secure half of the Brazilian market.
Chen believed that Nuctech’s excellent local presence, product quality, strong execution, and increasing market recognition are important reasons behind the company’s winning of the Rio Olympics security equipment contract. At the signing ceremony in April, the Brazilian authority called Nuctech a local company and spoke highly of their efficiency in delivery. The equipment will continue to be used by various Brazilian cities after the Olympics.
