Chinese audiences will gain easier access to Broadway productions and performances as the American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards expands its broadcast coverage in China.
The Broadway League Tony Awards China, the first and only authorized agency of the Tony Awards in China, settled in Beijing's Economic-Technological Development Area (E-Town), on April 17, the fourth authorized agency in the world to do so following other agencies from the UK, Japan, and South Korea.
The Tony Awards are considered the highest U.S. theatre honor, the New York theatre industry's equivalent to the Academy Awards (Oscars) for motion pictures, the Grammy Awards for music and the Emmy Awards for television.
"Broadway has been the world-wide symbol of stage performance supported by its mature business operation models," said Chen Cao, representative of Tony Awards China, adding that the top culture brand will help China develop and innovate its own cultural industry.
Chen said Broadway can bring about successful production mechanisms and business models, providing experience for China in exploring its path of art industry.
Tony Awards China signed cooperation agreements with the Beijing Performance and Arts Group and LeTV to promote the art performance and entertainment market in Beijing.
China's original dramas can take this opportunity to share an international platform and present Chinese performances abroad.
Tony Awards China will not only add new elements to the cultural and creative industries in E-Town but lead to more cooperation opportunities, said Zhao Yajuan, director of E-Town's publicity department.
Beijing's E-Town has put together many cultural enterprises, including StarTimes and John Hughes VFX Science, Ltd.
