Zhang Feng, chief engineer of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, told a press conference on Thursday that China has started research and development in fifth generation mobile networks, and it plans to build an open R&D platform for 5G technology this year, with the technology to be fully commercialized by 2020.

According to media reports, the MIIT said the research and development stage will last three years, from 2016 to 2018.

Theoretically, 5G can support data transmission speeds more than 100 times faster than 4G networks. With 5G, a copy of a high-definition film could zip to your mobile phone within one second. It would thus offer customers better online experience. In short, 5G means greater capacity, faster network speeds and more applications.

At the just-concluded China Development Forum in Beijing, President of Qualcomm Inc, Derek Aberle, said that in the next three to five years, 5G will be a revolutionary technology, affecting every aspect of our lives.
