Beijing’s Chaoyang District has set up over 1600 meeting rooms for open discussion of community affairs, according to an official at the 2016 local Two Sessions.
The Two Sessions of Chaoyang District comprise the seventh session of the 15th Chaoyang People's Congress (NPC) and the fifth session of the 12th Chaoyang Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), which started on January 12th.
Most of the meeting rooms were originally spare space in residential communities. After refurbishing, they can be used for open discussions of day-to-day problems.
In the 13th Five Year Plan (2016-20), 1666 meeting rooms will open to the public, scattered in 233 residential communities in the District.
Local authorities have resolved to have open discussions in an orderly and efficient manner.
Residents are also encouraged to come up with their own proposes, targeting specific problems and issues in everyday life.
At a local community in the northwest of Chaoyang, more than 200 deserted bicycles were stacked in a mess and troubled local residents. Sun Liantao made a proposal that all bicycles be sent to a recycling plant and their owners given subsidies. The plan worked smoothly and the community is now clean and tidy.
“In 2015, 2555 effective proposals were made and 400 are being carried out,” said a local official with the community affairs office.
