Xia Hong has become a paper-cutting artist with extraordinary talent, despite losing her arms at the age of seven.
Without arms, Xia Hong began to race against misfortune. She has won championships for 400-meter and 800-meter races and the long jump at provincial and national games for the disabled.
"If I were ten years younger, I might be able to take part in the Paralympics," Xia Hong said, "I am not willing to depend on my parents or others."
Xia Hong finished her junior and senior high school courses over seven years of self-study and was enrolled at a vocational college in Heilongjiang province to study advertising design in November 1999.
She discovered paper-cutting in 2010 and amazed visitors with her excellent cutting and knitting skills at the Shanghai World Expo.
In August 2014, Xia Hong was invited to perform for the wives of APEC leaders during their tour in Beijing. She designed a work called "Under the Blue Sky", using the images of doves, carnations, and hearts. The wife of the Malaysian prime minister said she hoped to teach the craft in her own country.
In her spare time, Xia Hong takes part in charity activities and volunteers at welfare centers and nursing homes.
Now Xia Hong is planning a charitable organization and hopes to become a full-time worker for public welfare.
