Ouyang Ziyuan, born in Central China's Jiangxi province in 1935, is an academician and the leading scientist of China's lunar exploration program.
He graduated from Beijing Institute of Geology (present day China University of Geosciences) in 1956, and became a graduate student in the Institute of Geology and Geophysics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Ouyang Ziyuan is a pioneer in the research of extraterrestrial materials, such as meteorites, cosmic dust, and lunar rocks, as well as astrochemistry, lunar science and comparative research on planets. He also founded astrophysics as a discipline in China.

In his academic career, Ouyang Ziyuan made many scientific breakthroughs and published hundreds of papers with world recognition. He also cultivated an excellent research team, which laid a solid foundation for China's exploration of the moon and the solar system.
With his outstanding academic achievements in geochemistry and astrophysics and more than 10 years of research on the technical feasibility of lunar exploration, Ouyang Ziyuan became a senior scientist in China's lunar mission, which landed the Chang'e-1, Chang'e-2 and Chang'e-3 probes successfully. He was also considered as the "father of the Chang'e probes".
