Around 120 examples of ivory carvings from mammoths that lived during the glacial period over 10,000 years ago were displayed for the first time at the 10th China Beijing International Cultural and Creative Industry Expo.

The mammoth ivory carving works exhibition was one of five exhibitions held by the Maolong Cultural and Creative Industrial Park in Beijing's Chaoyang district. Other exhibitions include paintings, accessories and gifts, jade carvings, and modern ceramics.

Only the ivory of mammoths found in Siberia and Alaska is suitable for carving, so the carvings are called "white gold" by collectors as they are very rare and precious, said a person in charge of the park.

Since trading in ivory products was forbidden in 1990, there is a shortage of ivory and carving techniques from past generations have failed to be handed down.

As a substitute material, mammoth ivory not only comes to life again after thousands of years, but helps preserve ivory carving skills.

The Maolong Cultural and Creative Industrial Park serves as a platform for Chinese traditional art display, research and development, and sales. Focused on Chinese high-end light industrial arts, it also provides traditional art with access to overseas markets.
