Most couples celebrate their wedding with a grand party or a honeymoon, but Zhao Hongcheng, a civil servant at the local tax bureau of Beijing's Xicheng district, sponsored a poor student in the remote rural area of Northeast China as a special celebration for her wedding in 1993.

Besides supplying financial support and goods like stationery, she was concerned about the child and tried to follow his academic progress through frequent correspondence.
From then on, Zhao began to pay close attention to students in need in Beijing. In 2001, she knew a girl in grade two in a local primary school who could hardly continue her studies due to poverty. She helped her to complete the classes.
She treated the girl just like her own daughter, caring for her physical and mental health. On holidays, she took her for outings together with her son. She also prepared gifts for her on Children's Day and for Spring Festival.
In 2005, she sponsored another two students in Qinghai province, and in March 2008, she helped two middle school students in Beijing. In April 2014, she helped a high school student in Beijing's Miyun district. Over the past 21 years, Zhao Hongcheng has sponsored as many as 10 poor students.
