Zhang Guangming, a local resident born in 1941 in Beijing's Fengtai district, retired from an elevator factory position more than a dozen years ago, but he has never stopped working as a selfless helper.
In 1983, Zhang became friends with a blind couple, who worked at the China Braille Press and lived in Xicheng district, about 10 km away from where Zhang lives.
Zhang found the couple faced a lot of inconvenience caused by their condition, so he managed to spend two days helping them with their housework every week until they retired eight years later.
When he noticed that three blind workers had to walk through a flood of vehicles and a busy marketplace before getting on the bus, he volunteered to escort them as soon as they got off the bus in the morning and after work in the afternoon.
He has kept this habit for more than 20 years, regardless of bad weather.
In his spare time, Zhang also does haircuts for senior people with movement difficulties in his residential community.
Zhang has a keen and lifelong interest in voluntary service. He has worked as a volunteer in a raft of grand events in Beijing, such as the 65th Anniversary of the Victory of the World Anti-Fascist War in 2010, the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, and the national "Two Sessions".
