Beijing and its people suffered deeply under Japanese occupation, but the army and residents fought against Japanese aggression with bravery and valor, says a new series of books telling Beijing's history of resistance during World War II.

The book series was launched on Aug 24 in Beijing to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1937-45) and the world anti-fascist war. The series consists of 12 books with over two million Chinese characters, digging into the history of Beijing's resistance against Japanese aggression.

To make it readable, several books in the series tell the history as stories, such as how common people living in Beijing, called Beiping when it was under occupation, fought against the Japanese aggressors. There is also a book narrating Japanese outrages to Chinese cultural relics during the occupation.

The series was written based on in-depth historical material collection and research. "The book Beiping under Japanese Occupation is the fruit of 10 years of research with abundant primary sources," said Xie Yinming, former director of Party History Research Department of Beijing Municipal Party Committee. "It fully and accurately tells the political environment, economy, culture, and living conditions when the city was under Japanese occupation."

The series is also filled with memoirs, books, news reports, and records of foreigners who lived in Beiping at that time, displaying the real history of Beiping's resistance against Japanese aggression.

The books were planned by the Publicity Department of Beijing Municipal Party Committee and published by the Beijing Publishing Group and four other publishing houses.
