Beijing statistics authorities announced that Beijing has shifted 121 commodity markets out of the city since 2014, as part of its efforts to relocate non-capital functions, Beijing Daily reported.
The very large clothing market near the Beijing Zoo is one of them. "All shops in the market are required to leave as soon as possible," said a public transportation staffer in the Beijing Zoo.
A sanitation worker added "there is a remarkable decrease in the number of people coming here, and my work becomes much easier because there is less garbage on the ground."
Among the total 121 wholesale markets, about 87, 72 percent, were formerly located in the major downtown area of the city. Beijing has reduced its downtown market area by 661,000 square meters, cutting 15,000 shops and 46,000 people. The city's Haidian district alone relocated 36 markets and reduced business area by 233, 000 square meters.
Dahongmen area, another wholesale clothing market in Beijing's Fengtai district, also shifted four large-size wholesale markets to Baigou, in Baoding city of Hebei province. In 2014, about 600 shops reopened in Baigou, and there will be another 3,000 this year.
Small markets with revenue below 100 million yuan per year are the major ones to be shifted out of Beijing. This move will help the capital optimize its market structure and ease the pressure on environment and traffic, an official from Beijing's Statistics Bureau said.
