Older residents in the Sanlitun community of Beijing's Chaoyang district can now receive day care or full-time nursery care in community-based nursing homes thanks to the city's efforts in providing more options for taking care of the elderly.
"This community-based nursing home has become my second home," said a 65-year-old lady who is almost always at the nursing home, when she's not visiting the doctor.
"I come here at daytime almost every day, chatting with others, singing songs, watching old movies, or playing games. The staff treats us very well," she said. "Sometimes I eat lunch here and I will pay for that, but for staying here and doing some activities, I am never charged at all."
There are around eight older residents who receive daytime care here, whether it's dining, emotional comfort, or taking part in other activities.

The location has 23 beds and provides varied services, including short-term boarding, temporary accommodation, dining, bathing assistance, medical care, hair cutting, and massages.
"The people living here are mainly disabled, or afflicted with dementia, or at an advanced age. We provide full time care for them. In addition, we are trying our best to provide local aging people with various services they want, for example, the day care, home-stay care and full-time care," said Zhang Yu, head of the nursing home.
Similar to the one in the Sanlitun community, the Chaoyang district has around 70 other community nursing homes that serve the elderly.
Wang Jun, head of Chaoyang district Community Services Center, said "We will conduct a survey on the situation of older people in the community before we build a home in the area, and then we decide what services should be provided based on perceived needs."
"In addition to improving service at nursing homes, the district is piloting community specialized nursing homes which will allow the elderly to get care in their neighborhood or home," said Li Xiaomei, director of the instruction center of serving seniors in the district.
