The city of Beijing's agriculture bureau has announced that it has invented an entirely new mousetrap for use in strawberry fields in the Pinggu district. The mousetrap is safer and more environmentally friendly.
The trap is intended for places where chemicals cannot be used and is part of the wider trap system. Bureau plant protection personnel explain that the system consists of evenly placed traps that can effectively control mice throughout the year.
In comparison with the chemical traps, it is not only safer, but can control mice both above and below ground over a longer period of time, and will not kill other animals.
The bureau has continued to innovate in its trap system, based on local conditions, and, since 2014, has applied for trap patents used on 52 hectares of land in six counties and districts including Changping, Shunyi and Pinggu. It has come up with different approaches for farms, orchards, and parks.
It says they will continue their efforts in field demonstrations where rice and potatoes are grown and promote its use across the city. It will gradually replace the old chemical method to protect agriculture and the environment.
