A Chinese doctor who saved a woman in San Diego has been praised by Internet users and also dubbed "a model Chinese tourist".
Tang Ziren, an emergency doctor from Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, said on his micro blog that he was visiting the SeaWorld adventure park in the California city when a tourist from the United States fell to the ground about 10 meters away.
Tang said he gave the woman cardiopulmonary resuscitation for more than 10 minutes until she recovered with the help of a defibrillator. The woman's identity was not known.
The doctor also said he missed a whale performance due to the rescue, but the park's management was very grateful to him and allowed him to watch a special performance later.
Tang posted six pictures of the incident on his micro blog.
He did not say when he saved the woman, but Yang Shuling, a publicity official at the Beijing hospital, confirmed his actions to China Daily, adding that Tang is in the US for a training program and cannot be reached.
"I think it is instinctive for doctors like Tang to offer help in such cases of emergency," she said.
Tang said: "I did not hesitate after seeing the woman pass out. I saw no reason why a doctor who handles emergencies should just stand by when a person falls down beside him."
He said a key reason for him to publish his experience on his micro blog was to increase public awareness of cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
By Thursday afternoon, Tang's story had attracted more than 9,900 comments. The National Tourism Administration described Tang as a "good Chinese tourist" on its micro blog.
One Internet user said: "Tang's actions should be applauded. He showed the kindness and virtues of a Chinese and set an example of good behavior for Chinese abroad."
The tourism administration has urged Chinese tourists traveling abroad to abide by the laws and customs of the countries they visit.
Last year, Chinese tourists made more than 100 million trips overseas, the most in the world, the administration said.
