A special fund for boosting China’s documentary industry — Zhongshang Leihe Documentary Creation Fund – was launched at the VR DOC Xiqu Documentary Conference, which was a part of this year’s Beijing International Cultural & Creative Industry Expo, on Dec 13.
As an important part of Xicheng district’s participation at the grand event, the fund was considered as China’s first financing and trade platform on documentary production.
It was set up to unite professionals on both creation and markets across the globe, and support high-quality projects and outstanding directors to seek international cooperation and export Chinese documentaries to the world, with a total of more than 100 million yuan ($16.3 million).
There are more than 1,000 documentary festivals and expos in the world, but most of them are operated without special funds and market-oriented financial support.
Xicheng district saw the business opportunity in this sector, as it boasts several cutting-edge industries that have a close relationship with the documentary production and marketization, such as finance, technology and culture.
These advantages could produce an amazing effect when they were integrated to promote the development of the documentary.
The Zhongshang Leihe Documentary Creation Fund was initiated by Beijing Shanghe Investment Fund Management Co, operated by Beijing Leihe Culture Media Co, with the guidance of the district’s culture promotion authority.
Representatives from domestic players in the industry, including CCTV, BTV and SMG, as well as international production & broadcasting institutions, and organizers of documentary events from Japan, South Korea and Canada, attended the launch ceremony.
