In the first two years, Wang donated most of his salary to support the association.

Wang Tao started his first anti-spitting campaign in May 2006 and launched jintan.org, "jintan" means to forbid spitting, a non-commercial website in July 2006. With the support of the government, the Green Woodpecker Association was set up in October.

The Beijing Municipality Civilization Office and Beijing Municipal Bureau of City Administration and Law Enforcement donated and packaged tissues for the association. People from all walks of life, including university students, social workers, retired residents and primary school children, began to take part in their activities.

In addition to this, the association also advocates civic manners by dissuading people from shouting and using swear words, lying and taking off their shoes in public.

In 2012, jintan.org was renamed as the "Green Woodpecker Website." It is committed to promoting garbage classification in communities, low-carbon travel and clean air to improve the city’s environment and promote a green lifestyle.
