A total of 27 enterprises, including Lenovo, Baidu, Foton and BOE, made it to the list of the first batch of IP (intellectual property) leading enterprises in Zhongguancun Science Park, issued by Beijing Intellectual Property Bureau and the Zhongguancun Administration Committee, on Oct 16.
The companies were selected based on the following criteria including the patent they applied for, the regulation of the IP system and the sustainability of making a profit for the company.
Lenovo, BOE, Foton and Qihu Techonogy won the title of "Zhonguancun Leading Enterprises of IP". The other 23 were recognized as major "Zhongguancun IP Demonstration Enterprises", and potential leading enterprises.
"In 2013, all the leading companies applied for more than 1,000 patents, while all the demonstration companies applied for more than 100 patents," said a staff member at the innovation department of the Zhongguancun Administrative Committee.
In the first eight months of this year, the 27 companies applied for 9,001 patents, counting for 35 percent of all the 19,000 companies in the science park. Among the 9,001 patents, 3,427 were approved, accounting for 23.1 percent of all the companies in the park.
Owning abundant patents has laid a good foundation for market expansion. The overall revenue of the leading companies exceeds 130 billion yuan ($21 billion), accounting for 6.7 percent of the total revenue of the enterprises in the park.
During the next few days, the enterprises will take part in lessons including how to avoid breaking the IP of other companies. Apart from the professional training and guidance, the companies may also win funding support of up to one million yuan.
According to the committee, it plans to cultivate ten enterprises with annual patent of more than 1,000 items, and 50 enterprises with an annual application exceeding 100 items by 2015.
