More than 1,000 high-definition digital cameras have been installed in Beijing's Huairou district, which will host the upcoming APEC meeting, the municipal police said on Wednesday.

Police in Huairou installed 1,000 new high-definition digital cameras in crowded places of the district, such as schools, busy streets and gas stations, aiming to ensure the security of the meeting, according to a statement provided by the capital's public security bureau.

In addition, the district also upgraded the existing 500 digital cameras used for closed-circuit monitoring, including 200 that can be moved or installed on cars, the statement said.

"In this way, we can sit in our office and watch and monitor the security situation of the district's every corner via 27 big screens, and deal with emergencies as quickly as possible," said Li Bingjian, deputy director of the information and telecommunications department of the district's public security sub-bureau.

"The high-definition digital cameras can identify faces within 30 meters, and monitor pictures within 500 meters," Li said.

"When our police officers drive police cars on patrol, the removable digital cameras will work automatically and broadcast the pictures to the district's public security sub-bureau," he added.

On Monday, the district's sub-bureau also added and integrated police officers to its mountainous areas, to enhance the area's security and help local residents solve any disputes that arise during the APEC meeting.
