A seminar on innovation and entrepreneurship was held in Zhongguancun Science Park, Beijing, on Sept 30, attracting around a hundred foreign experts from 17 countries including the US and the UK.
Jiang Zhigang, a member of the standing committee of Beijing's Municipal Party Committee, said that the industrial revolution and the fast changing economic development provides opportunities for Beijing's innovation-driven development.
He also said that the so-called innovation-driven development is essentially skills-driven. Such people should be the inspiration that frees the potential of innovation and entrepreneurship. And skilled people should be the driving force to enhance technological innovation and improve the integration of technology and the economy.
Jiang also said that Beijing and Zhongguancun being the national technological innovation center should provide a strong attraction to global high-end personnel, who will help pave the way for innovation-driven development.
Guo Hong, director of the Zhongguancun Administrative Committee, said that after 26 years' development, Zhongguancun had become a role model of technological innovation in China.
According to Guo, the number of corporate ventures in Zhongguancun takes up one third of the national total. This proportion is similar to Silicon Valley to the US.
Zhu Jiankang, an academician from the United States National Academy of Sciences, and professor at Purdue University said that with Zhongguancun's representation, the innovation and entrepreneurship environment in China has achieved great improvement. In order to become an influential global technological innovation center, the mechanism to attract skilled people needs to be further aligned with the world.
