Central area will carry the largest underground area in Beijing
Located to the east of Beijing’s East Third Ring, to the west of Zhenzhilu Road, to the south of Guanghualu Road, and to the north of Jianguolu Road, the central area is Beijing CBD’s development focus. As large as 30 hectares (300,000 square meters), the central area of Beijing’s CBD is composed of 18 zones.
It is said that the central area is building Beijing’s largest underground public space with a total area of 520,000 square meters. It will be known as the deepest, largest, and most functionally sophisticated underground project in Beijing.
The total area of both over ground and underground will be 4.1 million square meters, among which the over ground area will be around 2.7 million square meters. A total number of 19 office buildings will be built and will form the iconic architectural complex of Beijing CBD central area.
The underground area contains various services and facilities, which include an underground transportation system, underground merchandise streets, underground infrastructure, underground storage space, and underground defense space.
The CBD central area is reasonably planned to be a transportation hub and a shopping center at the same time, said the director of Beijing CBD Administrative Committee. The Subway Line 1, Line 10, Line R1, and Line 17 converging in the underground space of CBD central area will be connected with bus stations in the northeast of Guomao Bridge.
Furthermore, underground roadways will be built with merchandise streets along the side. Pedestrians can shop and dine when transferring. In addition, the underground space of all buildings in the central area will be connected.
The central area of Beijing CBD has five floors underground. The space between the first floor underground and the ground floor will contain infrastructures, such as a drainage system and gas pipelines. As well as restaurants and entertainment facilities, the first floor underground will also connect to subway lines.
Vehicles can drive through the central area on the second floor underground to ease the heavy traffic over ground. The third to the fifth floor underground will be used as a car park, machine rooms, and defense space. The underground area will be able to provide hundreds of thousands of square meters of defense space.
