Researchers begin birth defect study

Experts began a research project on Friday looking into birth defects and genetic disorders, as 900,000 babies are born with mental or physical disabilities each year in China, making up 5.6 percent of all newborns.

The research will involve surveys and analyses of biological samples. The experts' findings will be used to create a database for further decision-making in this area.
