China's largest search engine, Baidu, signed an agreement with the United Nations Development Program, on Aug 18, to build a big data lab for research and solutions for global issues such as environmental protection, healthcare, education and disaster relief.
The agreement calls for using Baidu's data technology to analyze and process industrial data to make prediction and to provide suggestions for developmental strategies at the UN. In the current stage, the lab will mainly research environmental protection and health issuers, then, in the future turn to education and disaster management.
The lab's first environmental protection solution is an e-waste recycling application, named "Baidu Recycle", which allows users to take photograph their electronic waste and get the name, category and estimated scrap price for it.
In the future, the UN-Baidu big data lab plans to establish an open platform and pull in more partners.
