Beijing and its co-host city Zhangjiakou have entered the second phase of bidding for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, Zhao Yinggang, deputy secretary-general of the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games Bid Committee, said on July 30 at a press conference in the capital.
The two cities will focus on preparation of a bidding report to be submitted to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) before January 7, 2015, Zhao announced.
The bidding report will illustrate plans for venue construction, transport, environmental quality, climate, security and marketing. The Chinese version of the first draft of the bidding report will be completed in mid-August.
Seven International Sports Federations will arrive in Beijing to inspect the two cities' preparations before October of this year. The IOC Evaluation Commission will visit the candidate cities in February and March before officially announcing the host city in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on July 31, 2015.
Zhao said, "Beijing will make all-out efforts in preparing to strive for the final victory."
If the bid is successful, Beijing plans to put 12 sports venues into use for the 2022 Winter Games. The city will also make full use of its well-maintained 2008 Summer Games venues for the 2022 Games, so only a few new venues will need to be built.
The ice events will be hosted in Beijing’s Olympic Sports Center, and the snow events will be held in Yanqing County and Zhangjiakou, a city in neighboring Hebei Province.
Beijing, together with Oslo in Norway and Almaty in Kazakhstan, remains in the running for the Games, as was announced by the IOC Executive Board on July 7.
