Beijing's medical and health institutions have received technical training to combat the deadly Ebola virus, according to the municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CDC said it has enhanced quarantine and monitoring, and can detect suspicious cases promptly if the virus spreads to Beijing.

Though the virus has claimed hundreds of lives in West Africa, there is no need for Beijing residents to panic, said the CDC.

Earlier on Wednesday, WHO spokesman Paul Garwood told Xinhua News Agency that Chinese people have no need to fear that the virus will spread to their country.

The CDC has warned travelers to the epidemic area to avoid contact with infected people and non-human primates in the wild, as well as their blood and excretions. The virus is mainly transmitted through direct contact with infected people and primates, including apes and baboon.

The World Health Organization announced that by July 29, there were 1,323 suspected and confirmed Ebola cases and 729 deaths in Guinea, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.
