Yu Wen, born in 1967, is the headmaster of Peizhi Central School - a school for mentally disabled children - in Beijing's Haidian district.
She began her career as a teacher at the school in 1989 when there were over 50 students and 17 teachers. Yu was the youngest teacher among them. People knew little about special education at that time, and some were judgmental.
"It hurts me so much when I hear someone call me a teacher of stupid students. I am determined to give these kids a sense of dignity," said Yu.
Yu teaches many classes alone – including Chinese, math, music, sports and art – when the school is lacking teachers. She also researches various teaching methods for children with disabilities.
In 2000, Yu became headmaster of the school. Now there are more than 300 students and 110 teachers. After years of development, it has become a leading school in the field of special education.
