China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation and YUM! Restaurants (China) recently launched an event in Beijing to raise money for students from poverty-stricken families in Yunnan province.
The event, titled "Juan Yiyuan, Xian Aixin, Song Yingyang", literally "one-yuan donation to show love and to improve nutrition", is an annual activity initiated by the foundation and the restaurant company since 2008 to raise money for students in less privileged areas.
The charity program calls on people to donate 1 yuan ($0.16) to a fund aimed at improving students' nutrition.
On July 5 at Honglingjin Park in Beijing, hundreds of college students, residents, and teenagers from Beijing gathered to promote the "one yuan donation", asking people to donate money through billing systems at YUM! restaurants.
During the event, Jiang Shaogao, president of the foundation, said he hopes more people will join the charity program to help students from low-income families in less developed areas live healthier lives.
Jiang Qin, an executive with the company, promised that every single yuan people donate at the company's restaurants will be transferred to the foundation directly. The money raised through the program will be audited by a third-party institute, Jiang said.
Since 2008, the charity has raised more than 90 million yuan, and about 125,000 students have benefited from the program.
