A new musical - Dr Butterfly, brought by South Korea's Hyundai Theater Company - was staged at the Century Theater of Beijing on June 27 and 28, marking the 22nd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties.

The musical was well-received in New York last year. Its creation group brought it to Beijing and made the musical's debut in China to enhance cultural exchanges among artists from the two countries.

Based on the real experience of Joo-Myung SEOK (1908-1950), a Korean entomologist who made significant contributions to the taxonomy of the native butterfly species of Korea, the production pays tribute to the noted scientist but also raises the awareness of climate change and environmental protection.

Sponsored by the Beijing Cultural Development Foundation (BCDF), Korean Cultural Center (KCC) and Korea Energy Management Corporation, the performance also kicked off the cultural exchange festival for the 22nd anniversary celebration.

The BCDF and KCC will also join hands to provide exhibitions and other exchange activities afterwards, hoping to promote the normalization of such exchanges and deepen the understanding and cooperation of each other's culture and arts.
