BenCham 'Great Gatsby' gala raises funds for charity

A charity gala on May 31 organized by the Benelux Chamber of Commerce raised 117,875 yuan ($18,860) for the Morning Tears organization.

The BenCham ball brought together the most important Benelux companies active in China along with Belgian Ambassador to China Michel Malherbe, Luxembourg Ambassador Paul Steinmetz and Wim Frenken, police attache at the embassy of the Netherlands in Beijing.

Several important Chinese companies including HNA Group joined the gala as well.

At the Peninsula Beijing Hotel, the 230 guests were taken through a glamorous Great Gatsby evening of singing, fashion, feather dances, the traditional BenCham Quiz, a jazz combo, a live and silent auction plus raffle for Morning Tears.

Jojanneke van den Berge, a noted Dutch journalist and TV host, was flown in especially for this event with help from sponsor KLM, giving the event an extra touch of glamour.

Support from "diamond" sponsors SK China and HNA, as well as "golden" sponsors ING, Barco, BEA, IEE, Peninsula and Beijing 1421 turned the event into a big success, said organizers.

Morning Tears is a global charity organization taking care of the rights of children of convicts. "It is devoted to creating a loving and caring environment for them in which respect and understanding overcome biases and prejudices," said organizers.

"The Benelux support comes at a time when Morning Tears really needs it to continue its work for children of convicts. It means a lot to all the staff and volunteers, especially as it extends the longstanding cooperation between BenCham and Morning Tears," said Hans Lenders, program support manager at Morning Tears.

BenCham said the success of the event would not have been possible without the support of many sponsors such as Vandergeeten, Bofferding, 1421 Wines, Nestle, Etihad, Uber and Lava.

BenCham said that it is grateful for the support this year and is ready for an even more splendid edition of the BenCham ball in 2015.

The Benelux Chamber of Commerce is among the most active business platforms in China.

Its members are leading companies from Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg that share an active interest in developing trade and business in China.

It is the only chamber of commerce that is officially recognized and supported by the embassies of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg in China.
