Artists capturing the beauty of Xishan

An international painting, calligraphy and photographic season of the Xishan Mountain area kicked off in Beijing on May 31, celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France.

More than 50 Chinese and French artists including photographers, painters and calligraphers, will capture the beauty of Xishan using different art forms.

"We have paid great attention to the event. We hope Chinese and French artists can strengthen their exchanges and work together to demonstrate the beauty of Xishan," said Chen Mingjie, publicity chief of the Haidian district government.

"I have heard many historical stories about some French people who live in the Xishan Mountain area. I can't wait to take photos of historical relics which portray the cultural exchanges between China and France," said Philippe Bourgeois, a famous French photographer.

Beijing has begun renovating many Sino-French historical relics in Xishan, aiming to develop the area into a cluster of the cultural creativity industry, a tourist attraction featuring Sino-French exchanges, as well as a base for public diplomacy between China and France.

In the early 20th century, some celebrated elites such as French poet Saint-John Perse; French literary scholar André d'Hormon; French doctor Jean Jerome Augustin Bussière and Chinese social activist Li Shizeng, lived in the area and made great improvements in fields like education, autonomy in rural areas and the construction of social infrastructures.
