The first robot sports meeting in Zhongguancun will be held in Beijing’s Haidian district from November 2014 to March 2015, according to a press conference on May 27 by the working committee of robot motion of China and the Haidian science and technology committee.

Middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities (including military academies), training and scientific research institutes, enterprises and individuals can all sign up for the competition.

The sports meeting will consist of multi-rotor unmanned plane and animal robot ball pitching contests. The unmanned plane contest is divided into junior (14-17 years old) and senior (above 18 years old) groups. Preliminaries will be held from November 2014 to February 2015 in Beijing, Heilongjiang’s Harbin and Jiangsu’s Nanjing. Registration to join the meeting begins on June 1 and ends on Sept 30. The final contest will be held at Beijing University of Science and Technology in March 2015.

Awards worth more than 5 million yuan ($800,000) will be prepared to encourage all social sectors to participate. First prize winners in both junior and senior groups of the preliminaries will each receive 100,000 yuan; second prize winners, 50,000 yuan; and third, 20,000 yuan. The first prize winner in the junior group of the final contest will receive 500,000 yuan; second prize winner, 150,000 yuan; and third, 80,000 yuan. The first prize winner in the senior group of the final contest will receive 1 million yuan; second prize winner, 200,000 yuan; and third, 100,000 yuan. The first prize winner of the animal robot ball pitching contest will receive 500,000 yuan; second prize winner, 100,000 yuan; and third, 50,000 yuan.

In addition, the meeting has come up with a job evaluation system to give incentives to the meeting crew, including markers, registrars, timekeepers, referees, arbitrators, arbitration committee director, coaches, athletes, sports teams, head coaches, news media, journalists, support units and sponsors. Evaluation work will start after the final contests are over and be based on online votes. The results will be released at the summary meeting to be held in May 2015.

Haidian district is home to many institutions of higher learning, scientific research institutions, well-developed high-tech industries and a core area of the national independent innovation demonstration zone, making it an ideal place to hold the robot sports meeting.

The meeting has received great support from the General Administration of Sport, the Ministry of Education, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Chinese People's Liberation Army’s Headquarters of the General Staff. It is jointly sponsored by the General Administration of Sport’s Youth Sports Department and Social Sports Administrative Center, the Ministry of Education’s Sports Health and Art Education Department, the Chinese Association of Artificial Intelligence, the Beijing branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Haidian district government, the Chinese People's Liberation Army’s Military Sports Bureau, the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the Beijing University of Science and Technology, and the working committee of robot motion of China.

Robots are an interdisciplinary technology that involve mechanical design, electronics, control, sensor and materials. They vividly represent high-tech productization and reflect a country’s comprehensive technical strength.
