The Summit on the Beauty of Film – The Art and Technology of Animated Film took place Tuesday, April 22, at the China National Film Museum in Beijing.
The forum, part of the fourth Beijing International Film Festival, welcomed esteemed guests in the animation field, including Peter Del Vecho, producer of Frozen; Dale Mayeda, visual effects supervisor of Frozen; Carlos Saldanha, director of Rio and Ice Age: The Meltdown; Peter Lord, co-owner and creative director of UK stop-motion animation house Aardman; and Rob Minkoff, director of The Lion King and The Forbidden Kingdom.

The first half of the forum consisted of guests speeches. Peter Del Vecho gave a presentation discussing the development and animation process on Frozen. He stressed the three key elements that guide him in the process of producing a strong film: a believable (though not necessarily realistic) world, great characters and a compelling story. Del Vecho went into detail regarding the components of a compelling story. "We look to three things in telling a compelling story. We want it to be relevant, relatable and surprising."
The acclaimed producer also stressed the importance of working with the right people. "I used to think the idea was the most important thing, and I realized it’s not the idea, it’s the people involved. You have to have the right team of collaborators. If you have a great idea, that’s just the beginning, that doesn’t make it great. To make it into a great movie you need the people. If you don’t have the right people, you’ll turn a great idea into something that doesn’t work. If you have a bad idea, with the right people you will discover that it’s a bad idea and will turn that idea into something better."
