The championship - organized by the World Curling Federation and presented by the Chinese Winter Sport Federation - is the first top-tier curling competition to be held in Asia, and is expected to raise Beijing's chances in its bidding for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Curling originated in Scotland in the 14th century and has been an official sport in the Winter Olympic Games since 1998. The sport was introduced to China in 1995, and the Chinese national men's curling team ranked 4th at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics – a historical best finish for the team and a reminder for Chinese people of the fun and excitement brought by the sport.

Twelve teams will compete in this year's championship. The Chinese team will face Germany in its first match.
