Q+A | Frontier inspection body

Editor's note: After the Ministry of Public Security issued the new visa policy, the Beijing General Station of Exit and Entry Frontier Inspection received thousands of inquiries. The authority provided the following answers on its micro blog.

Can Chinese travel to Thailand with just their passport and get a visa on arrival?

Yes. The new visa policy was issued at 5 pm on Jan 28, and travelers can go to Thailand with their passports and get a visa on arrival. What's more, a visa exemption agreement between China and Thailand may be enacted this year.

Does that guarantee exit?

The frontier inspection decides whether a person can leave or enter.

Will all inspection authorities adhere to the new policy that states a traveler does not have to leave from a major airport?

The Ministry of Public Security issued the new policy, which means it is a nationwide requirement and all frontier inspection authorities should adhere to it.

Why doesn't China make visa exemption agreements with developed countries, including the United States or European countries?

Any potential agreement requires the foreign affairs authorities of the countries involved. We are confident other countries will follow suit.

The Bahamas agreed to visa exemptions with China. Can we go there now?

Not yet. The visa exemption agreement will be effective in mid-February.

Does the new visa policy mean Chinese travelers can go to the 45 countries with just a passport and get a visa?

The countries and destinations have implemented the agreement or are about to do so. But every country has the right to adjust their visa policies. It is always wise to bring backup paperwork in case of emergencies. This will allow travelers who experience difficulty to contact the embassy with all their details. Safety is always the priority.

Will airline companies provide boarding passes under the new policy?

Boarding passes are up to the airline, but we will communicate with them about the policy and provide any assistance they may require.

San Marino is one of the countries agreeing to the visa exemption, but it has no airport. Do we still have to land in Italy with a Schengen visa?

This is a problem that also applies to other destinations. If, for example, people want to travel to the Bahamas, they may have to transfer in a country that requires a visa.
