Beijing will not grow into the economic center of China, said Du Deyin, director of the Beijing Municipal People’s Congress Standing Committee, while joining the panel discussions with delegates from Chaoyang district at the Second Session of the 14th Beijing Municipal People's Congress on the afternoon of Jan 16.
Beijing is China’s political, cultural, educational, scientific, technological and sports center.
Du said Beijing should not be an economic center, but its industries should serve the economy of the capital city. Beijing does not need to attract so many non-locals to work here, but it should be capable of influencing the whole nation and serving other cities. Officials have been preoccupied with undue political achievements, which may distort the development role of the city. Everyone wants to work towards Beijing’s growth if the goals are within the capacities of Beijing.
Some industries should be ruled out in Beijing. In some areas, prices in Beijing are even lower comparably. So an increasing number of people have come to Beijing due to the low cost of living. Beijing will serve other cities, according to Du.
