More than 80 families living in an old community in the Wudaokou neighborhood of Beijing's Haidian district have burned coal for warmth in winter for many years.
This traditional way to keep warm not only causes heavy pollution but also leaves people in danger. A total of 58 families have replaced coal stoves with electric heating equipment with the help of their sub-district office.
The residents are charged only 0.4 yuan ($6.61 cents) per kilowatt-hour during the day and 0.3 yuan ($4.96 cents) at night.
