The South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the world's biggest ever, began operation as its eastern route was recently completed. The project, with eastern, central and western routes, is designed to take water from China's longest river, the Yangtze, to feed North China's drought-prone areas, including Beijing and Tianjin. The eastern route, with an investment of more than 50 billion yuan ($8.22 million), goes through Jiangsu, Anhui and Shandong provinces and will benefit about 100 million people.
