A volunteer program for social order was released by Haidian district in Beijing on Dec 3. More than 400,000 people will be organized to participate in a group of volunteer service activities, one of which is maintaining the traffic orders in some key areas of the district.

The district will arrange six to eight volunteers to assist the traffic police in ordering each of the 25 major junctions and 120 key sections at rush hour, from 8:00 to 9:00 am and 5:00 to 6:00 pm on working days.

They will hold placards and stop people from running traffic lights. They will also help pedestrians carry heavy bags when crossing the road.

"With our guidance and help, people won't rush to run the red light anymore," a volunteer said.

Haidian will also organize activities of this kind with the help of volunteers, such as a program that calls for courteous behavior on the internet, a beautification project for the city and a campaign on caring for nature.
