There was a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) culture event for diplomats in Beijing's Qijiayuan Diplomatic Compound, in the Chaoyang district, on Oct 12, which drew in more than 30 ambassadors, counselors, embassy staff members, and their families from Austria, Algeria, Spain, and other countries, and UN agencies.

Participants at a lecture follow the instructions of a TCM expert on massage exercises.

Doctors from local hospitals provided consultation for the diplomats and their families, who were surprised by the range of health techniques, such as therapeutic scraping and traditional massages.

The event had the support of medical organizations and companies, such as Beijing Tong Ren Tang Health Pharmaceutical. Other support came from a TCM medicinal herb grower in Beijing, which provided some fresh herbal specimens and rare Chinese medicines, which amazed the participants.

One of the organizers, the district's Public Health Office, explained the gathering in this way, "We've been getting bilingual TCM specialists to form a talent pool for years, all of them with overseas practice or leaning exchange experience, as well as a good command of oral English. We’ve also arranged bilingual lectures on TCM and health care for diplomats and their families, and teachers from international schools in Beijing."

There are now 24 international medical services in the district, including six joint-ventures, accounting for more than half of the city's total of such services, which dealt with around 280,000 foreign patients in 2012.
