Beijing is expanding its subway system and will increase the use of public transportation downtown, according to a clear air action plan released by the State government recently.
By 2015, Beijing subway lines will span 66 kilometers in total, and the ratio of public transportation will be above 50 percent.
In total, eight lines will finish construction in the city during the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015), including Line 7 and Line 14, and the second phase of Line 6 and Line 15. The subway system is expected to cover downtown to the extent that people can reach any subway station by walking only 1,000 meters on average.
In addition, passengers dealing with overcrowding on Line 10 and Line 5 will spend less time waiting for a train. The two lines will have shorter departure intervals, dropping from two minutes and 15 seconds, and two and a half minutes, respectively, to two minutes for both, by 2014 or 2015.
More trains will also be purchased, and the subway depot and power system will be extended, said an official from Beijing’s transport authority.
