Beijing's urban area is very limited. Finding ways to increase green plants in the urban area to clean the air is a pressing issue. According to the person in charge of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscape and Forestry, Beijing has been working to plant and protect green plants during the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015).

Over three years of work, Beijing has added nearly 3,000 hectares of urban green space. Urban green coverage has reached 46.2 percent and per capita park green land area has reached 15.5 square meters as of this June. Beijing's urban area will add 1,000 hectares of new green land and accomplish 200,000 square meters of greening.

According to the development plan for Beijing's landscape and forestry during the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015), by 2015, the urban green coverage rate will reach 48 percent, with per capita park green land area reaching up to 17 percent.
