The high-speed railway that links Beijing and Shanghai saw a sharp increase in the number of passengers in its second year of operation compared with the first year, according to Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway Co., Ltd.
The company said the railway saw 74.4 million passenger trips from July 1, 2012 to Sunday, which marked the two-year anniversary of the railway's opening.
The figure was up 39.5 percent from the 53.34 million passenger trips recorded in the railway's first year of operation, the company said.
The 1,318-km railway has shortened travel time between Beijing and Shanghai to about five-and-a-half hours from the previous eight hours.
China has been steadily expanding its railway network, as trains are the most commonly used means of transport for long-distance travelers.
The combined length of China's high-speed railways totaled 9,356 km as of the end of last year, the longest in the world.
