Chen Gang was born in Chongyang, Hubei province, in May 1966. He joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in May 1988 and began his professional career in August 1989. He graduated from Tsinghua University (as an on-the-job postgraduate student) with a master’s degree in urban planning. He is a senior engineer.
He is an alternate committee member of the 18th CPC Central Committee, member of the Standing Committee of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee, and vice-mayor of Beijing municipality. His duties include assisting the mayor in city planning and taking charge of housing and urban-rural development, land resources and major rail transport projects.
Chen formerly served as secretary of the Communist Youth League Committee at the Architecture School, Tsinghua University; assistant to the mayor of Liuzhou city, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region; director of the Comprehensive Management Office of Liuzhou; deputy director general of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Urban and Rural Planning; deputy director general and then director general of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Urban Planning (Office of Capital Planning and Construction Commission).
