Overview
Located on the site of "Qing Hua Yuan" in Haidian district, Beijing, Tsinghua University was founded in 1911, formerly known as a royal garden of the Qing Dynasty(1644-1911). The campus is famous for its beautiful surroundings embraced by shady trees and time-honored architectural complexes with different features and styles. Forbes Magazine in 2010 listed the school as one of the 14 most beautiful campuses, the only one from Asia.
It is one of the leading universities affiliated with the Ministry of Education of China, among the key universities in National Projects 985 and 211, and a prominent center for higher education and scientific research. The university holds the largest number of academicians affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Science and Chinese Academy of Engineering. It also has the most top disciplines, Key National Laboratories, national awards in science and technology, research funds, and articles indexed in “Science Citation Index”, “The Engineering Index” and “Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings” over the years. More than 70 percent of the top 10 students in science and 30 percent of the top 10 students in liberal arts according to the National College Entrance Examination in China have selected the university for their undergraduate studies.

Degree programs for international students
Graduate programs
Tsinghua University offers 99 master’s and 78 doctoral programs to international students (see appendix for catalog of programs). Master’s programs are usually completed in 2-3 years, and doctoral programs in 4 years. Certificates of degrees and graduation will be awarded to those who complete the entire course work and pass thesis/dissertation defense.
Eleven master’s programs and one doctoral program are offered in English. Others are offered in Chinese or bilingual in Chinese and English.
Graduate Programs in English
In the academic year 2013 - 2014, Tsinghua University will offer 11 master’s programs and one doctoral program in English. Programs are developed for applicants who are skilled in English but do not have Chinese language proficiency. Owing to their high quality and unique features, the programs have been attractive since their establishment several years ago. In fall 2012, more than 300 international students had enrolled in programs.
Undergraduate programs
Tsinghua University offers 38 undergraduate programs to international students (see appendix for program catalog). Undergraduate programs have a schooling system of four years, except the architecture program that requires five years. Programs are delivered in Chinese or bilingual in Chinese and English. Bachelor's degrees and graduation certificates are awarded to those who finish required coursework and pass thesis defense.

Tsinghua University has established agreements or MOUs with over 90 foreign universities on student exchanges. The departments/schools of Tsinghua University have cooperative relations with overseas universities.

Visiting student program
Tsinghua University possesses advanced research facilities and rich teaching resources, including more than 200 undergraduate and graduate courses offered in English. Foreign students can take courses or do research as a visiting student and may apply to the International Students Office, Tsinghua University. Before submitting applications, applicants should ask for advice from their supervisor/tutor in their home institution and discuss with the relevant department/school of Tsinghua University.
The schooling system for visiting students ranges from one semester to two years. A non-degree certificate of advanced study will be awarded if the visiting student successfully finishes his/her studies at Tsinghua. Official transcripts are available upon request.
Chinese language program
The Chinese language program promotes Chinese language worldwide to help people in other countries acquire a better understanding of China. Any qualified foreigner; overseas Chinese; or compatriot from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan may apply to the International Students Office, Tsinghua University.
Chinese language program for international students, spring 2013
The Chinese language program promotes the Chinese language globally and helps people in other countries acquire a better understanding of the country. The academic year is divided into two semesters:
(1) Spring semester: Mid-February to the end of June (for 2013 spring semester: Registration date is Feb 18-19. Final examination time is June 24-26. The date to pick up a completion certificate is July 1-2. Students can continue to study for the 2013 autumn semester and may leave after final examination);
(2) Autumn semester: Early September to mid-January. Each semester consists of 18 weeks (20 class hours per week, four class hours per day, Monday to Friday). Instructors from The International Chinese Language & Culture Centre (ICLCC), Tsinghua University, deliver lectures.
