In recent years, Beijing has accelerated its agricultural developments, making progress with urban-style modern agriculture, including seeding-themed, recreation-themed, recyclable and emerging-savings agricultural models, combined agriculture with environmental construction and strengthened ecological, recreational, tourist and cultural agricultural functions.
In 2011, Beijing turned to alternative urban/suburban agricultural production facilities (such as low and high-tech green houses, seed production plants, hydroponic gardens and other urban agricultural practices) as part of its “Non-Staple Food Project”. Beijing developed such facilities on 25,000 mu (1,667 hectares) of land during the year, bringing total area of such facilities to 326,000 mu (21,733 hectares). It devoted 55,000 mu (3,667 hectares) of land to planting vegetables, combined total of 580,000 mu (38,667 hectares), and established ten 1,000 mu (67 hectare) and above standard vegetable gardens and ten large seedling farms.
In 2011, revenues generated by Beijing's agricultural production facilities and seeding-themed agriculture increased by 11.9 percent and 24.3 percent over 2010 to 4.56 billion yuan ($705.88 million) and 1.81 billion yuan.
Beijing has strengthened regional cooperation, establishing 600,000 mu (40,000 hectares) of vegetable gardens outside the city.
Since 1998, Beijing has promoted recreation-themed agriculture: 95 municipality-level sightseeing agriculture demonstration gardens were designated; local standards, including Levels and Evaluation of Rural Folklore Tourism Villages have been issued; The activities, ranging from Strawberry Season and Cherry Fruit Season to Daxing Watermelon Festival and Pinggu Peach Blossom Festival were held. Residents have been encouraged to experience agricultural-oriented recreation, and recreation-themed agriculture.
In 2011, Beijing's agriculture sightseeing gardens and folklore tourism households generated 2.17 billion yuan and 870 million yuan in revenues, representing increases of 22 percent and 18.2 percent over 2010.
During the 12th Five-Year Program (2011-2015), Beijing will accelerate construction of the National Modern Agriculture Science and Technology City and China Beijing Agriculture Ecological Valley, strengthen emergency-response systems and ecological, recreational and science and technology demonstration functions of agriculture, establish the brand "Safe Agriculture;' develop convention- and exhibition-themed agriculture represented by the World Seed Congress and World Grape Conference.
