Beijing's tourism industry is developing dramatically to become an important pillar for the capital's developments. With the theme "Great Tourism", Beijing is becoming a world-class tourism city.
In 2011, Beijing received more than 200 million tourists, a year-on-year increase of about 15 percent, including more than 5 million inbound tourists staying overnight, a year-on-year increase of about 6 percent. Beijing's total tourism revenue exceeded 300 billion yuan ($46.44 billion), a year-on-year increase of about 16 percent. It received 210 million domestic tourists, a year-on-year increase of 16.7 percent, generating combined revenues of 286.43 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 18.1 percent.
In 2011, Beijing received 4.47 million foreign tourists, a year-on-year increase of 6.1 percent, and 730,000 tourists form Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, a year-on-year increases of 6.6 percent, which generated foreign currency revenues of 5.42 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 7.4 percent.
In 2011, the average occupancy rate of Beijing's star hotels was 59.9 percent, a year-on-year increase of 3.5 percentage points.
Beijing's tourism products and business patterns are becoming more colorful. The city is home to more than 200 A-level or higher rated tourist areas; 14 national-level tourist demonstration spots with manufacturing-industry themes and 15 agriculture-themed tourist demonstration spots; more than 200 municipality-level folklore tourism villages and nearly 10,000 municipality-level folklore tourism households, along with more than 720 three-star or higher-rated hotels.
During the 12th Five-Year Program (2011-2015), Beijing will upgrade its tourism infrastructure, services and management. It seeks to attract more investments for tourism projects, strengthen sales promotions and establish a tourism system that conforms with Beijing's characteristics to explore high-end and specialized tourism projects, develop new tourism products, including suburban tourism products and enhance its tourists' per capita rate of consumption. It will strengthen cooperation with international tourism organizations, share domestic and international tourism resources and promote Beijing's image as an international high-end tourism destination.
