Beijing hospitals get extra police after stabbings

Police have beefed up security in hospitals across the capital following two knife attacks on doctors and amid rising tension from patients to medical staff.

Some 53 police offices have been established at 50 hospitals in Beijing to maintain order and better respond to emergency incidents after two doctors were severely injured in two separate stabbings earlier this month, says a Xinhua report on Tuesday.

Lv Fuke, a Beijing native attacked Xing Zhimin, a female doctor at Peking University People's Hospital at 10:25 am of April 13. Later in the evening he stabbed Zhao Lizhong, a doctor at Aerospace Hospital, in the neck.

Responding to the news of the extra police assigned to hospitals, Zhao wrote on his Sina Weibo micro blog on April 25: "If my injury may contribute the improvement of the condition of the working environment a little bit, then it did not happen in vain."

Fuke was arrested by police in Zhuozhou, north China's Hebei province on Tuesday evening.

The two latest incidents follow another attack in March when a medical intern was killed in the Northeastern city of Harbin.

Li Mengnan, 17, barged into an office at the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University on March 23, and stabbed medical practitioners in the head and neck before trying to take his own life with the knife.

The knife attacks triggered a flurry of public concern on the fragile relations between doctors and patients.

The Fuke case is under investigation.
