Beijing Bike Week kicked off on Thursday with an exhibition showcasing some of the top bicycles in the world, including the fastest P5 time trial bike produced by Cervelo, and a replica of Cadel Evan's Tour de France winning BMC bike.
New bicycle brands taking part in the exhibition include Avanti and Swift. Bicycles by UCC, a high-end Chinese brand, are also on display.
Besides modern bicycles, there were those from private collections, including the bicycle that the last Qing Dynasty Emperor Puyi rode, and a bicycle made in 1950 by Shuangyan, a Tianjin-based bicycle company, in the exhibition.
The event will also include an alley cat race, in which participants race to test their navigation and traffic skills to find interesting locations in the city. A hard-court bicycle polo tournament will be held at 1:30 pm on Sunday. The Flying Scotsman and Island Etude, two movies about bikes, will also be screened.
"Riding bicycles is the new trend. It is healthy and eco-friendly. Beijing is also a big city of bicycles. We believe bikes will become even more popular in the near further in this city," says Shannon Bufton, one of the event's organizers.
Bike week ends on Sunday, March 18.
