What they say

I have not felt any improvement in traffic this year. I still have to spend an hour and a half for my 20-kilometer drive from home to work.

Feng Jun, 31, an IT worker, commutes by his own car.

Beijing's traffic is bad. I don't think there is any improvement. The bus system is convenient, but the road condition remains bad, sometimes even worse.

Alan Coughtrey, 38, a worker from England, travels by public transportation.

These measures have proved efficient for us taxi drivers. The traffic is much better now, especially during rush hours. Big roads and streets are better planned and connected, so the traffic is much smoother.

Lu Tianyi, 30, a taxi driver in Beijing

I don't feel the traffic has significantly improved. I choose not to go out during rush hours, especially from 5:30 to 7:00.

Lim Jae-chan, 27, a student from South Korea, travels by motorcycle.

The information statistics are not well done. Among those waiting to win a plate are people who already owned a car, college students who have a collectively registered residence.

I hope the government could weed out those unqualified for the lottery system. I'm more worried that Beijing might adopt the auction method just like Shanghai. It costs too much.

Zhu Lei, 26, a financial worker, has been trying to win a license plate through the capital's lottery system since February without success.

I haven't noticed any improvement in road traffic when I take the bus. The traffic jams are still there. But I have to take the bus whenever I go out because the subway is too crowded and far from my home.

Sun Ge, 22, a senior worker at a bakery

Maybe the government has built more parking lots in the suburbs, but available parking lots in downtown areas are fewer and harder to find. The parking fees are rising sharply, by about 50 percent.

Huang Xiansong, 43, a chauffeur for State-owned enterprise in Beijing

The special bus lanes are effective in reducing traffic jams. At least, because of them, I feel it takes me less time to drive the bus between two ends. But sometimes private cars get in the way.

Kong Yurong, 44, a bus driver
