Man detained for kicking policeman
A man in Chaoyang district called police and demanded they pay his karaoke fee. He was later detained for assaulting a police officer.
The man, surnamed Fu, went to a KTV bar on Dec 12 last year. He was not allowed to leave the next morning because he did not have enough money to pay his bill. Claiming that he was the relative of a leader, Fu called police and kicked an officer's face when he tried to force his way out.
Fu was charged with the crime of interfering with official duties and will be go on trial soon.

Overseas travel angers parents
Expensive organized holidays are becoming popular among Beijing high school students and causing controversy among parents.
Many schools are organizing overseas travel in the long holidays, costing at least 10,000 yuan.
Many parents say they cannot afford such high costs and question why schools are holding such activities.
They also worry about the safety of these trips, and whether they will encourage unnecessary comparisons of wealth among the students.

Farmer abducts Red Cross staff
Farmer Sun Wenhui abducted a staff worker from the Red Cross Society of China because he could not afford his sick son's high medical expenses and the foundation had refused to provide any aid, Beijing News reported.
On March 31, Sun, of Henan province, came to hospitals in Beijing to cure his son's aplastic anemia. He spent all of his money but his son showed no signs of recovery. Sun turned to the Red Cross but was rejected because his son's illness did not qualify for help.
Sun's wife bailed him out after several days' detention.

Grads to sit village official examination
University graduates in Beijing register for the village official examination from April 26.
The Beijing government plans to recruit 3,127 village officials through the exam and 2,982 of them will be assistants to village heads. The other 145 will be assistants to directors of specialized farmers' cooperatives.
Districts and counties in the city will organize exams respectively after the registration.
According to local policies, village officers could earn 2,000 yuan a month during their first year and in the second year their salary will increase by 500 yuan.
In the third year, which is the last year of their contact, their salary is 3,000 yuan a month.

200,000 residents to be relocated
More than 200,000 residents will be relocated from the old city area in the capital to better protect the landscape, Beijing Youth Daily reported.
The residents will be transferred to rail track transportation areas in Chaoyang, Haidian and Changping districts and 10 construction programs will start this year with a floor space of 5 million square meters, according to the Fifth Beijing Culture Protection Forum held on Monday.
Chen Gang, deputy-mayor of Beijing, said relocation would be voluntary.
