Osaka Airport and Japan Airlines have received top-of-category distinctions in the OAG Punctuality League 2014.
The awards represent the authoritative ranking of on-time performance of airlines and airports worldwide.
Mark Clarkson, business development director Asia-Pacific for OAG, said: "With the world's most comprehensive schedules database of more than 900 airlines and 4,000 airports, OAG processes more than 21 million flight status updates every month, equivalent to 715,000 each day. The insight OAG provides is used across the aviation community to better serve market needs."
With 92.3 percent of arrivals and departures occurring within 15 minutes of scheduled time, Osaka Airport led not only its region but the whole world in on-time performance (OTP) for the medium airport category.
The airport, which serves as the primary hub for domestic flights in the Kansai region of Japan, served 14.53 million domestic passengers last year, an increase of 5 percent on 2013 representing the third consecutive year of growth.
Osaka was the only medium-sized airport to achieve an OTP above 90 percent, with Moscow Sheremetyevo and Copenhagen both recording OTPs of 89.8 percent to jointly share second place. Salt Lake City and Vienna airports took fourth and fifth respectively.
